History

Atlantic Marine Underwriters Inc. was founded in August of 1999 by Peter J. Taylor an experienced marine insurance industry executive to capitalize on the ever-growing business of international trade and logistical risk management as well as seize the many other opportunities in the domestic marine market.

The management of the firm is made up of Peter J. Taylor, President and Chief Executive officer and his wife Irene who is an accountant by trade. Mr. Taylor has been in the insurance business for over 25 years.

Until July 30, 1999 Mr. Taylor was the Marine Manager for Canada for the Wellington Insurance Company, formerly the Guardian Insurance Company of Canada. Mr. Taylor had been with the Wellington/Guardian for 14 years. Mr. Taylor joined as a senior marine underwriter, rising to Chief Underwriter in all marine classes and eventually becoming Marine Manager in 1996. Mr. Taylor was instrumental in increasing the volume from $1,500,000 to $13,500,000 over the years and moving the Guardian (Wellington) from 12th place in volume to 5th among domestic carriers.

Mr. Taylor is an honours graduate of St. Michael's College of the University of Toronto (1976) in Arts. He is an Associate of the Insurance Institute of Canada, majoring in Marine.

Mr. Taylor is an active member of the marine community and for many years sat as Chair of many of the committees of the Canadian Board of Marine Underwriters. Recently he held the position of Second Vice President of the C.B.M.U. He is a member of the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association and the Canadian Importers Association, and is currently a member of the Marine Club and the Toronto Marine Loss Group.
